Mobile Tented Safaris
Now camping in Africa is NOT what it used to be!Mobile Tented Safaris are designed to give guests an opportunity to see wildlife in undeveloped game areas, at a basic level of comfort suited to that environment whilst enjoying a closer appreciation of the bush, whilst traveling in vehicles designed for bush travel. So, it’s not a traveling lodge, it is a tented safari! The great aspect of tented safaris is that it is a very real experience whilst traveling in wildlife country. One gets dusty, sometimes stuck in the mud or sand and may have to help push or assist in some way. It is FUN, real, and re-establishes a sense of personal appreciation for the simple pleasures and comforts of life.
It also allows one to hear and see wildlife at closer quarters than staying in a chic lodge with brick walls, air conditioning and fancy menu’s.
Nowadays, most guests are housed in ‘large’ tents, about 15 to 20 feet long (5m to 6m) with en suite facilities, sewn-in floors with large insect-proof windows and a dedicated butler/tent attendant. He cleans and tidies your tent, washes and irons your laundry and turns your bed down every evening. It is a small part of being in Africa.
At night, secure in your comfy bed, wrapped around by a mosquito net, you can relax having had a hot shower, (washed your hair), great supper and a drink around the fire, before retiring to your tent to listen to the night sounds. Actually, after a long, busy day most travelers fall asleep in very short order, and waken in the early hours of the night when it’s quiet. Sleeping in a tent in the African bush is a fabulous experience for most people who have ‘always wanted to come to Africa’, and of course once zipped into your tent, one is safe from any physical danger and only the sounds ‘get through!’
There are of course different levels of comfort in mobile camping, from luxurious to very basic, and ‘participation’ levels. One only has to ask for the ‘Right’ one of your choice. It’s that easy.
The fun of a mobile camp is that the camp may be moved after a couple of days to a new site. In between moves, guests may stay in the comfort of a fixed lodge before catching up with the mobile camp at a new destination.
It is a fun and exciting way of experiencing Africa and wildlife at the same time. Some of the best years of my career have been whilst guiding mobile tented safaris in Africa’s wild places!
