Luxury Safari In Kenya.

Kenya is possibly the best known African luxury safari destination, which has benefited from generations of media exposure through books (Hemingway, Ruark, Karen Blixen and countless others), films (Hatari, Out of Africa) and many more. And of course the abundant films and documentaries shown on television, like Discovery Channel.

Masai Mara

This famous game reserve is the northern tip of the Serengeti ecosystem. The Serengeti (about 8500 square km) is in Tanzania, and the MASAI MARA, is in Kenya, essentially an open continuation of the ecosystem. The migration herds therefore are able to move freely between the two countries.
The name ‘Mara’ comes from a Ma (Masai language) word, describing the dotted effect of the trees on the grassy plains, and it has been a Masai controlled area for nearly 200 years.

The Mara is only 1500 square km, BUT the land northwards beyond the park boundary is all part of a community conservancy, and many safari camps are located in this zone, which is massive advantage.

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is located in the eastern half of the country, in the shadow of KILIMANJARO, literally. The international boundary between Kenya and Tanzania runs along the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro.

The springs in Amboseli are a result of the snow melt off Kilimanjaro, and they create small oasis in a very parched landscape. The wildlife in Amboseli are classic, and of course dominated by herds of elephant, and images of animals in the foreground with Kilimanjaro in the distant clouds are iconic!

Adjacent to Amboseli runs the CHUYULU HILLS, where the Masai, in partnership with one of Kenya’s stalwart guides, Richard Bonham, have established an incredible record of conservation, and as a result, an amazing wildlife experience.

Lewa Conservancy

Located in the shadow on Mount Kenya, lies a huge conservancy that was once a cattle ranch belonging to the Craig family. The sons inherited the ranch and decided to change the land use back to wildlife, and Lewa Conservency was born. Ian Craig has been at the center of this initiative, and Lewa is now owned and run by a Trust, purely for the benefit of wildlife. There are several small safari camps located within the reserve, and the quality and diverse species seen here makes it a unique destination!

There are several community-based conservancies that now have abundant wildlife resources for travelers to enjoy, and the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) is the core body of these initiatives, working with different Masai communities.

Mathews Range

This rugged mountain range has a number of small boutique camps located there, each very different in what they offer, and very different in style. The wildlife sightings are variable and species seen here are unique, for example Lesser Kudu, Kirk’s dikdik, gerenuk and Reticulated giraffe. The Samburu people who are found here live very traditional lives in this harsh thornveld, are open to western visitors stopping by to spend a few hours in their villages seeing how they live. At first sight they are similar to the Masai, but a closer look shows the differences between the two tribes, not least in the amount of beadwork worn by the men!

Nairobi

The Kenyan capital has a very interesting set of characters that have passed through it in the past 100 years! Nairobi was originally the main railhead for the British colonial government, and of course in the late 1800’s was the entry point for much of the settlement of East Africa. Linked by rail with Mombasa, which was the second largest port and settlement on the east coast, it grew into the capital as it was away from the coast, in the healthier highlands away from malaria and other diseases. Today, a few days in the city reveals a number of interesting places and experiences.
